Insect Sound ID is a browser-based field listening tool that turns a short recording of a calling insect into a likely species name. Instead of relying on visual identification alone, it listens to the sound itself and explains the audible features behind each suggestion, making it useful for anyone who hears a chirp, rasp, or trill and wants a concrete lead to explore.
How it works
You record directly in the browser or upload an existing clip in WAV, MP3, M4A, or OGG format, up to 25 MB. A phone recording is fine. The tool asks for a 5–20 second selection with one prominent repeated call and as little wind, speech, traffic, or handling noise as possible. Optional clues such as approximate location, date and time, and up to three photos help narrow the possibilities, though automatic identification uses only the audio.
A free recording check looks for a usable sound signal before you spend anything. A full ID adds a likely insect name and an explanation of the call's audible features. If no explained match reaches 80% confidence, the credit is kept.
Who it is for
- Curious listeners who hear an unfamiliar nighttime or garden sound
- Naturalists and students comparing cricket, katydid, and cicada calls
- Anyone who wants a documented field lead rather than a guess
Pricing and credits
Credits are sold in packs: a Starter pack with 3 ID credits for $2.99 and a Field pack with 10 ID credits for $6.99. There is no subscription or automatic renewal, and one delivered full ID uses one credit. Results and remaining credits follow a verified email across devices.
Privacy and scope
Original recordings, clips, and optional photos stay private and are scheduled for deletion after 7 days. Results are educational field leads, not safety, toxicity, medical, pest-control, or ecological determinations. The confidence score is the AI's own assessment, not a verified accuracy rate.
Insect Sound ID fits best as a lightweight identification companion for field recording, backyard listening, and nighttime sound exploration.
